Because you care, my very half- hearted review of “Where the Wild Things Are.” I am lucky to be gainfully employed by the company that put this film out (Thanks for the money and insurance. You guys are the best!) and so I got to catch an employee screening last night. People are excited about this film! Duh.

I had nothing but the lowest expectations for this film, and they were met? Congrats? I will say that this film dealt with a lot of the pertinent and timeless issues of being a kid and growing up. Themes of isolation, the sad realization that there are feelings that are beyond parental control for however smothering it may be, it also shields from the harshness of reality, at the same time the anchoring security of parental love. The lack of understanding of where your emotions are coming from, what they mean, why they effect the people around you, why they hurt others and the cold realization that they do. Love, heartbreak, life and the futility of it all. Also, monsters who are just representations of your psyche. Fun times at the movies!

Actually, the themes, in my opinion, outweighed the narrative of the film which dragged its gigantic hairy belly in some places. Also, just between you and me? Max is ANNOYING. I realize that he’s a 9 year old boy, and by definition hyperactive, loud, anxious. But still, damn. Kids are annoying! Duh, pt. 2.

Also, I think a lot of this had to do with my own childhood, but Max gets to act a damn fool and while his mother doesn’t condone it, she doesn’t seem able to control him either. I guess I resented him for that, because my entire childhood was more or less controlled by my parents, plus I never had a wolf costume! Oh hello, more information than was needed, how are you?

So final verdict. See the movie? Yes? Or don’t. I really don’t care. I work in TV anyways.

- I greatly enjoy reading Morrissey’s letters to magazines circa the mid 70s to the very early 80s. Such a strident young fan! For what it’s worth, I’m kinda on the same page as Moz re: the Ramones. They have a few obvious classics that are worthwhile but otherwise zzzzzzz. (via perpetua)
